Teachers are at a massively high risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSKs) throughout the school year. As a new term approaches, it is vital to take a proactive approach to help reduce the risk of any injuries, discomforts, or pain that ail teachers.

From long hours of standing to teach to long hours of sitting to grade, many MSKs can occur due to overexertion or repetition. Common injuries in teachers include:

  • Neck pain
  • Low back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  •  Concussions
  • Knee pain and/or injury
  • Ankle pain and/or injury.

A 2022 review discovered that an average of 70+% of teachers develop an MSK in the school year, with the highest being low back, upper back, shoulder, and neck pain. These injuries can occur because of sitting or standing for too long, from slips and falls, or poor ergonomics, however, they are most commonly caused by

  • looking down for prolonged periods of time,
  • Keeping your arm extended overhead for long periods of time and
  • Prolonged sitting.

Large parts of teachers’ jobs are to sit and grade assignments, write on the board, and to look at your students and their work. All of these incorporate the positions that commonly lead to an increased risk in MSK.

Having the Solveglobal member therapist available to teachers can help decrease the risk of MSK prevalence. Solveglobal provides teachers with comprehensive MSK care so they can educate their students without the hinderance of pain or discomfort.
